An excellent article “Getting Boys to Read” is posted on the website of Just Us Books, Inc. (a publisher of many books featuring African American children) at  http://justusbooks.com/Downloads_Teacher-Librarian-Center/GettingBoystoRead_JustUsBooks_2011.pdf.  The article describes differences found in typical boys’ and girls’ reading habits.  Boys tend to be more interested in informational texts, magazines and newspaper articles, as well as reading about hobbies, sports, and activities they are interested in doing.  They often prefer material that they can talk about, argue about, or use in a practical way.  The article offers many tips such as paying attention to what boys are reading, and allowing them to choose their own books.  Let’s continue to strive for equal opportunities for both genders, including the opportunity to read whatever will make them into readers!
