This March, WePAC was lucky to host not one, but two, local Philadelphia authors for Library Cafes!
Becky Birtha, author of Lucky Beans, joined students at Cook-Wissahickon Elementary School to share her latest children’s book, Far Apart, Close in Heart. Her newest books covers the many emotions that children may feel when they have a loved one who is incarcerated, and sparked conversation amongst our students. (Fun fact, Ms. Birtha is also a former WePAC volunteer!)
Meanwhile, over at the Andrew Hamilton Elementary School, local author Cousin Johnread his debut children’s book, Chase Does It All to students. Dedicated to his godson Chase, the book details spending a very fun day in Philly with friends and family. The students were excited to learn that Cousin John will be working on more stories about Chase, and we look forward to having him back soon!
As you may know, WePAC is actively working to more fully develop its collection of diverse books – books that prominently feature characters of color – for our students. We believe that it is important for our kids to see characters that look like themselves, so they can really experience the stories we read more fully.
